Important Announcement for ASN Students

Excelsior College®, in its goal to remain one of the most respected nursing programs in the country, has revised its Associate of Science in Nursing degree requirements. The specific changes were recently announced and become effective October 1, 2007. The effect that these changes will have on you depends on the status of your studies and progression in your degree program. Please read all of the information in this message to discover what specifically has changed and how/if you will be affected by these revisions.

Why are there changes?

In an effort to keep its curriculum relevant and current in the health care industry, Excelsior College® determined that the nursing requirements needed to be revised. Don’t panic! The revisions are not significant, which will allow for a smooth transition between curriculums. These changes will prepare you to be the best Registered Nurse that you can be.

What are the changes?

The new curriculum has one new exam and one new clinical competency assessment.

The nursing component consists of eight exams rather than seven.

  • The additional exam is a result of dividing the Nursing Concepts 3 exam into two smaller, more manageable exams, which should result in a higher pass rate.
  • Currently licensed LPN/LVNs continue to have the second nursing theory exam waived (Nursing Concepts 2), and therefore need to pass only seven exams.

There is a new clinical competency requirement – the Focused Clinical Competency Assessment (FCCA).

  • This is a three-part assessment of skills related to head-to-toe assessment, managing more than one patient, and working with a health care team.
  • The exam consists of three modules, which are computer simulations of clinical skills, and are administered at Pearson Testing Centers (the same site for all other Excelsior exams).

Below is a comparison of the two curriculums.
